EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES IN ZIMBABWE:
WILD ZAMBEZI WELCOMES THREE NEW PARTNERS TO OUR NETWORK!
The Wild Zambezi travel network is delighted to welcome three new partners offering private emergency medical services in Zimbabwe. This should be of interest to visitors who might be worried about what is available in terms of medical facilities should any emergency occur, especially in the more remote parts of the Zambezi Valley. There are surprisingly good medical facilities, doctors and emergency rescue and evacuation services in Zimbabwe, as long as you have proper medical insurance which covers private facilities and services. Read Wild Zambezi's Travel Advisory on Safety and Health and take a look at what the following new partners have to offer:-

ACE Air and Ambulance is a newly-launched Emergency Medical Services (EMS) company, licensed and approved to conduct ground and air evacuation, within Zimbabwe and the region. Operating from a base in Avondale, Harare, and in partnership with Halsteds Aviation Corporation (HAC) out of Harare International Airport, ACE is fully equipped to handle any emergency, with a 24-hour call centre and crews on standby. ACE also offers training courses in First Aid, CPR and AED; Basic Fire Fighting and Burn Care Management and an Advanced Hunters,Guides & Safari Operators Emergency Care Course.

EMRAS in partnership with Life Flight offer private road and air ambulance service available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. They have 25 ambulances based throughout Zimbabwe, in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare, Kwekwe, Masvingo, Victoria Falls and Bindura, and the capability of air medical evacuation throughout Southern Africa, including from remote areas like the Zambezi Valley, using a pressurised King Air 200 aircraft. They offer training in First Aid, Life Support (CPR), Basic Trauma management and provide medical cover for sporting and other events.
For more information and contact details, see EMRAS – (Emergency Medical Rescue Ambulance Service) in partnership with Life Flight/Executive Air
MARS (Medical Air Rescue Services) has a fleet of critical care road ambulances stationed in MARS bases across Zimbabwe in Harare, Bulawayo, Kwekwe, Kadoma, Gweru, Victoria Falls, Mutare, Masvingo, Kariba & Marondera. The company has a dedicated King Air 200 air ambulance stationed 24/7 at Harare International Airport for medical evacuation flights. The aircraft is permanently configured as an Intensive Care Air Ambulance and has a dual life port system on board. The MARS training school offers a number of First Aid and other medical courses.
For a small MARS Tourism Subscription of US$3.50 per person per day, visitors to Zimbabwe can ensure that they are covered for road or air emergency evacuation (even in remote areas) to the nearest appropriate medical facility under the medical supervision of qualified professionals in the shortest possible time. (Note, this service is not always covered by international medical insurance policies).

PUBLIC WALKING IN MANA POOLS – RECENT CONTROVERSY
There has recently been a great deal of controversy in social and other media centred around the issue of whether visiting members of the public are to continue to be allowed to walk "unguided" in Mana Pools National Park. In the recently-published draft of the ZimParks Tariffs for 2015 (not yet gazetted), there is a confusing reference to rules pertaining to "tours" stating that "tours must be guided..." By implication this clause could be intended to mean "no unguided walking". Many have interpreted it to mean a ban on public walking - a unique privilege which has been in place in this Park for many years. This has caused outrage on Social Media.
Conservation organisation, The Zambezi Society, which represents the interests of the visiting public to places like Mana Pools, has engaged the ZimParks Authority for clarification on this, as have other visitor representatives. The Society recently conducted a consultation survey regarding visitor behaviour to Mana Pools via its website. This was in response to recent worrying reports emanating from the Park about inappropriate behaviour and flouting of the Park regulations on the part of some visitors, (e.g. wildlife photographers disturbing animals by approaching too closely and crowding them, off-road driving, use of spotlights at night, littering etc). "It has been noted" states The Zambezi Society "that the perpetrators of the abuse are a relatively small percentage of the local and foreign visiting public as well as some tour operators. It would be a travesty if, as custodians alongside Zimbabwe's Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA), we allow the situation to deteriorate. This would inevitably result in draconian restrictions being imposed on tourism, thus reducing the area to a "typical game park" as opposed to a singularly unique environment with global significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site."
In consultation with the Park Management, tour operators, photographers and members of the public, the Zambezi Society set about drafting a comprehensive Code of Conduct for Visitors to Mana Pools, aimed at creating awareness of the problems and providing clear guidelines for future visitor behaviour in the Park. However, this is now on hold pending clarification of the "guided tours" controversy.
Wild Zambezi urges the public to wait for the outcome of negotiations and clarification of this issue.
In the meantime, if this issue is important to you, please take time to read some important guidelines in Wild Zambezi's Travel Advice section. In particular see:-
Respect the Wild (a previous wilderness Code of Conduct published by The Zambezi Society)
ATTENTION: AFRICA BUSH CAMPS INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS!
FREE FLIGHTS INTO MANA POOLS - MAY-JUNE
International visitors who are spending 6 nights in Mana Pools with African Bush Camps are in for a treat.
If they travel between now and the end of June 2015, they will benefit from FREE flights into the Park in conjunction with Safari Logistics (the company's sister travel and transfer company)!
African Bush Camps operates two properties in Mana Pools:-
- The luxurious Kanga Camp set inland alongside a pan which is a magnet for wildlife, especially in the dry months of the year (May-Oct), and
- The more adventurous Zambezi Life Styles tented camp which offers a river-based bush experience with canoeing on the Zambezi River.
The idea is that guests can divide their 6 nights between Kanga Camp and Zambezi Life Style and create their own combination of a riverside and an inland experience, thus making the most of this extraordinarily beautiful and relatively untouched World Heritage Site and wildlife area.
Flight routings included are Victoria Falls, Hwange, Matusadona and Mana Pools.
Note that this special offer is only valid for INTERNATIONAL guests travelling between now and the end of June. Flights to and from Harare are not included and will be quoted separately.

NEW MANA POOLS CAMP ON VIDEO

Kavinga Safari Camp is under construction in the southern section of Mana Pools, overlooking the upper reaches of the Ruckomechi River and only 9 kilometers from the famous and very wild Chitake Spring. Wild Zambezi was delighted to visit recently and is pleased to report that the building is progressing well. The raised platforms which will house individual tented chalets offer the most magnificent views over a waterhole, the flat, elephant-frequented, Ruckomechi river-bed below, and the Zambezi Escarpment mountains beyond.
The company has created a promotional video in advance of its completion later this year.

Jecha Point Fishing Lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River just downstream from Chirundu has had a busy family time at the lodge during the April holidays. They offer comfortable and informal chalet accommodation on a fully-catered or self-catering basis, as well as a campsite with a newly-completed ablution block.
In their latest newsletter, they report that every so often, they have a few experienced anglers visit who show them all how it's done! Ethan Fennell (pictured) was just such a pro when he came to visit with his family!
He says "I had the most wonderful time at Jecha Point and caught several nice fish which I was lucky enough to be able to release!! I caught my fish using live mbiri- they fought so hard and jumped a lot which was so so exciting!! One got stuck around the motor but Alan managed to get him off! My mum and I loved it so much we did not want to come back to Harare! Love Ethan"
Ethan has inspired the Jecha team to start a Junior Championship Board at the camp!
"All kids up to the age of 16 are eligible! Biggest caught and released fish at the end of the year will win a prize! (littlies can have Mom or Dad help out a bit). Jecha is a real family holiday spot and the kids love nothing more than fishing, swimming and seeing all the animals wandering around the camp. There are no TVs in camp so it's only good clean fun to be had! It's pretty awesome to see kids being kids and not being glued to some or other screen!"
Mother's Day Special at Jecha Point - valid for the week 10 - 17th May Book your family in and Mum stays for free!

.VICTORIA FALLS
THE NEW VIC FALLS AIRPORT:
DOES IT RIVAL JOHANNESBURG AS A HUB FOR TRAVEL INTO SOUTHERN AFRICA?
In a recent article about progress on the upgraded International Airport at Victoria Falls, Southern African Tourism Update has asked readers to comment on whether or not they think O R Tambo airport in Johannesburg could potentially lose out to the new, improved Vic Falls facility, as a hub for tourism to the region.
This may not be as far-fetched as it seems.
Colin Fryer of Centre Stage Travel in Cape Town thinks that Victoria Falls will be a very attractive alternative.
He comments: "The evolution of this airport is a regional game changer. Getting pax directly to a destination rather than hub and spoke is far more attractive and as such, the entire region which is well endowed with a rich tapestry of attractive pulls, will now be serviced by airlines directly from source markets."
It appears that the major challenges faced by the Johannesburg hub are things like "draconian entry visa regulations created in South Africa when gauged against the softening of the same regime in Zimbabwe/Zambia & Botswana" , the high cost of domestic routes in Southern Africa, punitive airport taxes, and an apparent disconnect between the actions of government agencies and the efforts of the tourism industry to attract visitors and investment.
The Victoria Falls, on the other hand, is situated right at the heart of the newly-created KAZA (Kavango/Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area), which covers approximately 520 000 square kilometres and is similar in size to France. This is the largest tourism-focused, conservation area in the world.
The US$150m (R1.7bn) upgrades to the International Airport at Victoria Falls (situated 22km south of town) are on track and scheduled to be completed by the end of September this year.
"This airport upgrading project is set to provide the perfect backdrop for inbound tourism to the region as well as become the region's top meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions centre," the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) said in a statement.
The new runway will cater for wide-bodied aircraft, such as the Boeing 747-400, B777 and Airbus A340. The current runway is being extended into a parallel taxiway, and a new international passenger terminal with a handling capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year is under construction (see picture). The existing terminal building will be also converted into a fully-fledged domestic terminal. The upgrades also include the construction of a new control tower and fire station.
Facilities include:-
· Check-in counters with modern technology.
· Airside shuttle bus service.
· Ten Immigration counters and three baggage carousels in the International Arrivals Hall.
· Increased duty free and retail space.
· First, business-class and smoking lounges.
· Landside restaurants and coffee shops.
· Banking facilities that accommodate Visa and MasterCard transactions.
· Free WiFi.
· Bureau de change, car hire and taxis services.
The Zimbabwean CAA also said there are future plans to build an airport hotel in the medium term.

VIC FALLS RECREATIONAL PARK WILL OPEN IN 2017
The Africa Albida Tourism group have issued a statement correcting erroneous recent media statements about their planned $18 million historical and recreational park, Santonga, which will cover 80ha in Victoria Falls.
"Santonga is an education, entertainment and conservation park, set to open in Victoria Falls in 2017, and it will tell the story of Victoria Falls, not only through its wildlife, but also its rich history and culture.... There will be no caged wildlife on display at Santonga, as incorrectly stated in the media, nor will it resemble the "Africa" Kingdom in the USA, Africa Park in Dubai and similar facilities in China," said the statement.
Africa Albida Tourism group chairman Dave Glynn explained: "It is getting pretty horrifying to learn how much and how quickly wildlife populations are under threat across Africa from poaching, range loss, habitat loss and a host of other, mainly human, interventions. At Santonga we will be placing a huge emphasis on wildlife education and conservation to try to help expose as much as we can and hopefully to become a funding node for many aspects of area wildlife preservation and research."
Santonga is also the story of people and the rich history that the area can boast. Visitors to Santonga will be taken on a highly interactive journey through time from the region's very beginnings.
Africa Albida Tourism is a hospitality group which incoporates the following iconic Victoria Falls properties:-
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Victoria Falls Safari Club and Victoria Falls Safari Suites
